After the latest elections in the US (2004), a large group of Americans felt the urge to say sorry to the rest of the world, for they hadn't been able with their vote to prevent George W. Bush from being elected for another term.
In Italy, we have nothing to feel sorry for: our country's importance outside its boundaries is much lesser. But after the latest elections in April 2008, almost half of us is dealing with another urging feeling: shame.
Reading newspapers from all over the world we have sadly realized that people outside Italy were almost as shocked as we were. Not that we didn't expect that. Berlusconi's self-indulgent politics have been quite notorious while he served his term from 2001 to 2006. We remember him generously cranking out plenty of embarrassing jokes and inopportune phrases, and now it seems we're going to attend plenty more of those pathetic shows.
We do love our country: that's why we feel ashamed, and want the world to know.
